As many EastEnders viewers will already know, Kathy Beale (Gillain Taylforth) has returned to Albert Square.
Which is no small feat, considering she’s supposed to have died in a car crash YEARS ago.
But why did she fake her own death? And why did she abandon her sons Ian (Adam Woodyatt) and Ben Mitchell (Harry Reid) in the process?
Well, according to The Sun, the plot was all based on the real-life drama surrounding John and Anne Darwin, who set up a canoe accident to look as though John had died.
Five years later, the insurance scammer was found alive and well - and the pair were sentenced to six years in prison for deception and fraud.
Speaking about the moment Dominic Treadwell-Collins (the big boss at EastEnders) approached her with Kathy’s story, Gillian told The Sun: “When Dom told me the story I said, ‘Oh yes that happened with the canoe people!’
“It had to be feasible, it had to be right. You don’t just want me in the shower. No one wants to see me in the shower!”
If only you’d been there to advise the Dallas writing team, Gillian.
However, while the parallels between the real-life case and the show seem to suggest an insurance scam, Gillian has said that there is a lot to come out about her controlling husband (rumoured to be Sharon’s biological father).
She said: “When you find out the way Gavin’s manipulated Kathy, you do see why she faked her own death.
“This manipulating person is a control freak. He controls everything Kathy does, and she’s become this person who can’t function without him. It’s all about control.”
She added: "Hopefully she’ll get [her] boys back, but she has to explain so much to them. Bit by bit they find out why she’s become the person she is and they start to understand that their mum’s been brainwashed. I’m hoping they’ll forgive me.”
Kathy is set to come face-to-face with Sharon (Letitia Dean) on Monday 14th September.
