The BMW driver plunged off a ferry terminal wall just after 3PM on Tuesday in Waitemata Harbour, Auckland.

Luckily two police officers and a civilian were standing nearby and saw the car go into the water, and quickly leapt into the harbour to save her.

‘[The car] just went straight down,’ said Erwin Kampos, who was on the scene.

‘The two police officers smashed the back windscreen, I tried to smash the side, and the sides didn’t want to break.’

‘They were running out of time because the water was filling up.’

As the front of the vehicle flooded, the blonde woman could be seen clinging to the back seat of the car, desperately trying to get at the last pocket of air.

Meanwhile the men, after having no luck with opening the car doors, began trying to smash the rear window with rocks.

Finally the windscreen gave way, and the men were able to pull the woman to safety - just in the nick of time.

It is still unclear what caused the woman to plunge into the water, but she is said to have escaped with just cuts and bruises.
