It’s every mother’s worst nightmare.

Sharonda Ross thought that her husband had picked up their 10-month-old son Jordan from Joann’s Day Care and Camp.

But, when the couple realised their mistake, they rushed to the day care to pick up their little boy and take them home.

It was 45 minutes after closing time, she has said, and the day care was apparently locked up and empty.

However, after banging on the window a few times, she suddenly realised that she could hear a baby crying inside.

"I banged on the window to see if someone maybe fell asleep. I heard my baby crying louder after the third time. I knew that was my baby," she told ABC News.

"That's when I told my husband to break the window."

She continued: “There's my baby - just left.

“Nobody's here, no cars, no nothing. I called the day care several times on my way to make sure to see if he's at home and on the way back and my child's here at day care by himself, no supervision. Nobody's here."

Sharonda has now filed a report with local police in Houston, Texas, and detectives are now investigating the child abandonment claim.

Speaking about the incident, Joann Davis, the owner of the day care centre, has said that she was shocked and extremely upset when she found out a child had been left inside by one of her employees.

She told Eyewitness News: "First I'm deeply, terribly sorry. I thank God he was ok.

“It was our mistake. I'm not saying it's not... but the main thing is the baby's okay, and I'm sorry as I can be."

Despite this, she added that the employee who accidentally left the baby alone will not be fired.
