A sign posted at a shopping mall in America has divided opinions among parents.

Oklahoma City Moms shared a picture of the sign, which read: “Please boys over 6 years of age use Men’s restroom’.

They captioned it: “If you were shopping at a local mall and saw this picture, what would your reaction be?’

Furious mothers blasted the sign, with one writing: “I would probably say something to mall management if they don’t have family bathrooms.

Do you think six-year-olds should use public toilets alone?
Do you think six-year-olds should use public toilets alone?

“I don’ t think I like the idea of sending my young child into a public bathroom alone. Plus in a women’s restroom what does it matter? They are stalls not urinals…”

Another commented: “All moms should just march into the men’s room and stand there while their boys used the restroom. Once this happens about a dozen times they will change their policy.”

However some agreed with the sign, insisting that their children didn’t need assistance when using the toilet.

One wrote: “My son used the public restroom at the age of 5 by himself. No need for me, his momma, to hold his hand. I patiently waited outside the door.

“I can understand ‘family restrooms’ for those who have disabilities and can’t use the restroom on their own but I see a lot of mother’s pamper their kids WAY too much.”

Earlier this week new dad Ashton Kutcher complained that public toilets are not gender or family friendly.

He wrote: “There are NEVER diaper changing stations in men’s public restrooms. The first public men’s room that I go into that has one gets a free shout out on my FB page! #BeTheChange [sic]”
