Bavalan Pathmanathan, 24, was batting for Majipay Parish Sports Club in Long Ditton when he was struck by the ball.
An air ambulance was called to the scene but the cricketer later died of his injuries.
His team-mate told a newspaper: ‘When he received the hit I asked from the other end if he is alright. He gave a thumb-up and nodded to indicate eh was alright, while pressing his chest.’
‘He took a couple of steps behind the stumps and collapsed.’
In a statement from the cricket club on their Facebook page, they were said to be ‘totally shocked by his death at this young age.’
This latest death comes just eight months after Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes died after being hit in the head by a ball during a match in Sydney.
But such incidents are rare, with a report from the Federation of International Cricketers’ Associations stating that cricketers are as much at risk from lightning strikes, terrorism and mental illness as they are to be seriously injured by the ball.
