It’s a chance to watch two people declare their love to one another and make a lifelong commitment, as they are cheered on by all the people who love them most.
But it comes at a pretty hefty price.
Yup, apparently you should be more than a little wary of all the brides and grooms begging you to “be our guest”, because it could leave you with a VERY depressing bank balance come the end of it all.
The Nationwide Building Society polled 2,000 British adults to see how much they spend during the pre-wedding celebrations and the ceremony itself.
And it seems as if, on average, wedding guests fork out a cool £377 every single time they get hitched.
It’s even worse for those who take part in a stag or hen do; those poor schmucks spend an additional £157.
Eep.
So how do the costs rack up so much?
Well, nowadays, you have to factor in accommodation costs, travel costs, new outfits, extra food, and, of course, those all-important wedding gifts.
Speaking on behalf of Nationwide, who conducted the survey, Phil Smith said: “Sharing in someone's special day is a wonderful occasion, but it can turn into a costly experience, particularly for serial guests.
“Nationwide current account customers can manage their money on the move easily with the Society's mobile banking app, which includes Quick Balance, allowing customers to see their balance at a glance without logging in, and Impulse Saver, which gives customers the opportunity to save small amounts at the swipe of a finger.”
How much do YOU spend on average at weddings? And do you mind forking it out?
