Coronation Street has been building up to one of its most controversial, emotional and moving storylines ever.
After battling against pancreatic cancer, last night Hayley Cropper - played by actress Julie Hesmondhalgh - made the decision to take her own life.
She carefully said goodbye to those she loved most - although they didn't realise it at the time - and went home to iron husband Roy's shirt, ready for her funeral.
The pair then sat together in their double bed and bid each other an emotional farewell, with David Neilson's character breaking down and begging his wife to reconsider her decision.
But Hayley's mind was made up. And, after drinking from a deadly cocktail of drugs, she lay back on the pillows and allowed Roy to hold her as she slipped quietly away.
The controversial right-to-die storyline has divided opinion but, last night, stars and fans alike flocked to Twitter to bid farewell to one of the show's best-loved characters… and wonder what on earth Roy will ever do without her?
Coronation Street stars also took to Twitter express their feelings on the episode:
And Julie herself, who has played Hayley for 16 years, made sure to bid farewell to her on-screen persona as well:
