The video came to the fore as Glitter – whose real name is Paul Gadd – was yesterday convicted at Southwark Crown Court of a new string of child sex offences. Glitter was the first person to be arrested as part of Operation Yewtree.
Sickeningly, one of his crimes included the attempted rape of an eight year old girl.
In the footage, from Glitter’s appearance on This Is Your Life in 1992, Roald Dahl’s daughter comes onto the stage and told the audience of how young girls would visit Glitter at her home, where he was staying at the time.
“Gary came to live in my house when he was between jobs,” she explained.
“My sister Lucy turned it into quite a successful venture because she used to pack the train full of her adolescent school friends in school uniforms and then she’d skive school. She’d bring them up to the house and charge them five pounds a head to come and gaze at Glitter.”
As she speaks, Glitter clearly looks uncomfortable. He shifts in his chase before shushing her – putting his finger to his mouth – before turning to laugh with the audience.
Glitter, 70, faces life behind bars for his offences.
A spokesperson for the NSPCC spoke after the trial and said: “Glitter recalled at his trial the screaming fans outside his home and at airports in the 1970s.
“He used the adoration of fans like these to violate young girls and satisfy his perversions, telling one victim that his assault was their ‘secret’.”
Currently, the Metropolitan police are investigating more allegations against the singer which came to light during his trial.
