Hungarian riot police fired tear gas and water canons to force migrants back from the Serbia-Hungary border, where they were demanding the gates be opened so they could pass through.
Many had to be treated by ambulance workers after having tear gas sprayed in their face - including women and children.
One migrant from Iraq said: ‘We fled wars and violence and didn’t expect such brutality and inhumane treatment in Europe.’
Desperate immigrants are attempting to reach safety after fleeing crisis in their home counties - with many of the number coming from war-torn Syria.
Once migrants pass into Hungary they enter the European Union’s Shengen Zone, which allows people to travel between member countries without restrictions.
Many of those displaced are hoping to get to Germany, who originally said they would put ‘no limit’ on the number of refugees they would take in.
Since then, the country did have to close its borders due to the massive influx of those seeking help, though it is once again open to migrants.
The UN has slammed Hungary’s treatment of the migrants , saying: ‘They must be treated with human dignity.’
Un Secretary Generl Ban Ki-moon said: ‘These were people fleeing war and persecution…we much show compassionate leadership.’
