The Australian woman had parked her car outside a childcare centre in Sydney on Wednesday afternoon, leaving her son sleeping in his baby seat while she nipped inside.

But while she did so, a 33-year-old man stole her vehicle, with her five month old son still strapped into his car seat.

Police found the car about five kilometres away after a brief search, but terrifyingly, the baby was nowhere to be seen.

A search team was dispatched to look for the infant, who was found hours later in a gutter by John Burgess - a local tradesman.

The baby was luckily unharmed by the incident, though he was red and extremely cold when he was found, Burgess said.

Meanwhile, the alleged car thief has been charged and is due to appear in court on Thursday.
