The country was left shocked after it emerged that 18-year-old Leah Washington had lost her leg in a traumatic roller coaster crash at world famous theme park Alton Towers.

Leah was enjoying a day out with her new boyfriend Joe Pugh, also 18, when the tragic accident occurred.

Joe was hospitalised after breaking both of his legs whilst doctors were forced to amputate Leah’s leg from above her knee.

She also suffered a fractured hand in the appalling incident.

But strong and determined Leah has made rapid progress since being struck down by the life changing injuries last week.

Her brother Luke explained to BBC West Midlands radio: “Compared to last week it’s a world of difference. It’s amazing to see.

“I walked into the room on Tuesday and it was the first time she has stood up since.”

He added that Leah was struggling to remember the details of the accident.

Luke explained: “There are bits that she struggles to remember but she has dealt with it better than I ever thought she would.”

Still in hospital, Louis Tomlinson from Leah’s favourite band One Direction has reached out to her in a touching tweet.

He wrote: “Thinking about you Leah & hoping you are home in South Yorkshire soon Xx.”
