Christian Polk told the courtroom: 'I think about what Andres Muños-Muños did every day.'

Adding: 'I wish my dad was here.'

Andres Muños-Muños, 23, was driving a pick-up truck drunk when he crashed into the car of off-duty policeman Dwayne Polk, 47.

Dwayne Polk had 16 years experience in the police force and was driving at around 3 a.m. when he was hit.

According to investigators on the scene, there were no skid marks to indicate that Muños-Muños even attempted to stop before crashing into him.

Andres, who is in the country illegally from Mexico, pleaded guilty to illegal entry and is likely to be deported once he is released for a Texas jail.

Dwayne's relatives wept during the hearing

Ahead of the hearing, Sheriff Adrian Garcia pinned a small gold star on Christian's jacket - similar to the one he wears.

'He told me I always need to be in uniform,' said Christian to the local paper Houston Chronicle.

The boy hopes to follow in his father's footsteps and go into law enforcement.

Mr Polk's relatives openly wept in court as they witnessed proceedings. His mother, Doris, said: 'Dwayne was a good father, He was always trying to help people.'

Muños-Muños was sentenced to 15 years in prison after pleading guilty to intoxication manslaughter.
