Lisa Reid, from Auckland, New Zealand, had no vision from the age of 11, after she developed a brain tumour that pressed on her optic nerve.

But one evening as she crouched down to kiss her guide dog good night, she accidentally knocked her head on the table.

Thinking nothing of it, Lisa went to bed, but when she awoke the next morning - nothing short of a miracle had occurred. Lisa could see.

‘I can’t really find words to describe how it felt - amazing, fantastic,’ she said.

‘You can imagine not being able to see and then you can, you can’t really describe that.’

Reid is sharing her story to raise awareness for New Zealand’s Blind Foundation, without whom she says she would be lost.

’They’ve been amazing. They’ve helped give me the freedom to have my independence…I’m grateful for what they’ve given me.’

Lisa said the most shocking thing about getting her sight back after over a decade in the dark was the changes to her brother, who was a child when she last saw him.

‘He was a man…with a goatee and everything,’ she exclaimed.

‘I turned into a woman and my brother turned into a man.’
