Chicago detectives are investigating a video posted to YouTube which appears to show a toddler smoking cannabis.

The tot, who is wearing a nappy, takes a puff of the joint, before the man behind the camera says 'smoke man, inhale', making sucking noises to teach the youngster.

Once the child has inhaled a few times, the man then says, "Let me hit that, okay?".

The video was uploaded on Wednesday, and received 1200 comments in a matter of hours.

Community activist Andrew Holmes reported the video to authorities who are said to be investigating the incident.

“This is sickening,” Holmes said.

“This child needs help ASAP if he hasn’t had help already. It’s disturbing to hear the adult that was in the background to let them hit it and they’re telling the child to inhale.”

"If anyone recognises that child or know who that child is, don't be afraid to call the Chicago Police Department," Holmes said.
