Another AMAZING supermoon is coming our way!
The middle supermoon of three in a row this year will grace our skies on November 14.
Our moon will be the closest to Earth it’s been since January 1948 on the 14th November, as we’re in line for our second supermoon in a row this year – it’s also the closest the moon will have been to earth in the 21st century so far!
It’s expected the moon will appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter than an average full moon, so this is definitely one to watch out for.
Originally a term from modern astrology for a new or full moon, that occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest approach to earth in a given orbit, the word supermoon now refers more broadly to a full moon that is closer to earth than average – the scientific term for this is a ‘perigee moon’. Many astrologists think a supermoon can have a huge impact on your chart, and certain supermoons affect different signs more dramatically: for instance experts claimed that last month's supermoon meant big changes for those of us who are Aries.
Scientifically, a supermoon event happens when one side of the full moon comes this close to us at a time when the earth, sun and moon are aligned – and it appears larger and brighter in our sky than we’re used to.
"The full moon of November 14 is not only the closest full moon of 2016, but also the closest full moon to date in the 21st century,"says NASA. And it won’t come this close to Earth again until 25 November 2034."
Depending on where you're viewing it from, the difference between a supermoon and a regular full moon can be easy to see, or difficult to make out. If the moon is high in the sky, and there aren’t any landmarks to compare it to, it can be tricky to tell that it's larger than usual. But if you're viewing from a spot where the moon hanging low, with something in front of it for scale, you can appreciate perfectly how awesome the supermoon really is!
The moon this November will become full at 1.52pm GMT on November 14 meaning we have the best chance of spotting the supermoon later that night – or if we’re REALLY lucky we might get a glimpse during the day. The third supermoon of the year is set to rise a month later on December 14.
