And despite American Amanda Knox and Italian Rafffaele Sollecito serving prison time for their alleged parts in the killings - their convictions were overturned in 2011.
However, the High Court in Italy appealed this overturn in January, on the basis that the third person convicted in the murder, Rudy Hermann Guede (who is still in prison), could not have acted alone, as Kercher's injuries suggested multiple attackers.
In a statement from Guede, he states that Meredith had blamed Knox for taking money from her bedroom, and that the pair had fought.
The 337 page document reads: 'At a certain point in the evening events accelerated; the English girl was attacked by Amanda Marie Knox, by Raffaele Sollecito, who was backing up his girlfriend, and by Rudy Hermann Guede, and constrained within her own room.'

Lawyer for the prosecution Manuela Comodi said the defensive wounds on Meredith's body suggest that it would be impossible for just one person to have killed her.
