Acid victim Naomi Oni’s attacker is jailed for 12 years

Mary Konye, who threw acid in the face of her friend, Naomi Oni, has been jailed today.

Naomi, 22, suffered horrendous burns to her face and chest, in the attack, which took place near her home in East London, in December, 2012.

Konye, who wore a veil to disguise her face during the attack, was handed a 12 year sentence by judge, who called her actions “premeditated and callous”.

In a victim impact statement, read in court, Naomi explained she’d been left suicidal, following the attack.

Following the sentencing, Naomi’s lawyer, Mitesh Patel, read a statement on her behalf outside the court, which referenced her turmoil, following accusatios she’d attempteed to disfiguring herself.

He read: “My family and I have been forced to put up with false allegations about my character, including the false allegation that I had done this to myself.”

Following the news, Naomi – who did not attend the sentencing – tweeted her thanks to those who have supported her throughout.
