A deadly earthquake hit Nepal over the weekend, claiming the lives of at least 3,617 people.

According to authorities, the death toll is continuing to rise as rescuers search rubble for remaining survivors.

Entire families have been wiped out as well as 6,500 injured by fallen rocks and avalanches as a result of the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

A spokesman for aid agency World Vision told the BBC: "Villages like this are routinely affected by landslides, and it's not uncommon for entire villages of 200, 300, up to 1,000 people to be completely buried by rock falls.”

The earthquake- the worst to hit Nepal in over 80 years- has been followed by powerful aftershocks, reaching up to 6.7 on the richter scale.

These aftershocks are making families too terrified to return to their homes, displacing thousands and forcing them to sleep in the open air.

Authorities are reportedly attempting to remove bodies from rubble to avoid causing health hazards in the effected areas.

Celebrities such as Harry Styles and Simon Cowell have spoken of their sadness over the loss of life and sent prayers to the people of Nepal.
