25 years after she rescued her as baby from a horrific car wreck, this good samaritan meets her as a grown woman.

In 1988 a young woman was travelling on a Californian highway when a sports car overtook her at high speed. Glancing through her window, Shelly Cumley and her friend could not believe how intoxicated the two men in car were.

'We knew they were drugged up or drunk and said to each other "those guys are going to crash."'

The car sped past them and the women commented that they wished they could notify the police about the reckless drivers, but as it was 1988 and there were no cellphones they had no way to warn anyone.

The horrific crash was caused by a drunk driver in a sportscar

Tragically, as the women turned a corner they saw that their prediction had come true - the men had crashed into another vehicle.

'The first thing we saw was the debris on the road and as we went further, we saw the accident. It was the worst thing I've ever seen in my life.'

The sportscar carrying the two men had crashed head on into another vehicle - and it was carrying a young mother and her 7 month old baby.

Nicole Farley says she feels no bitterness for what happened to her

Fearing the car would burst into flames, Cumley knew she had to get the baby out of the car.

The child's mother, Roanna Farley, was impaled by the car seat adjuster - pinning her to the seat so she was unable to see her if her baby was OK.

Her left eye and nasal cavity were also caved in and her pelvis was broken. Despite this, all she could scream for was her child.

'I reached in and grabbed Nicole, she looked perfect' said Cumley. 'I held her up to Roanna and said 'Look, here is your baby she's fine, she's beautiful.'

Roanna looked at her baby and it calmed her down as she drifted in and out of consciousness.

The Farley's are removed from the crash site by helicopter

In footage of the accident, Cumley can be seen holding Nicole in the background as medics tried to free Roanna from her car.

Cumley was told that the mother, Roanna, might not survive - her injuries were so severe, but was told on the scene that the baby would be OK.

But stopping by the hospital on the way back to see if the mother had survived, Cumley received the devastating news that baby Nicole was paralysed form the armpits down.

Panicking, Cumley was left with the worry that by pulling the baby out of the car, she had somehow caused the damage.

'I left that hospital changed forever. I was never sure of what my actions might have done,' she said.

Fast forward 25 years, and Cumley was sitting at her computer when she saw an email with a video attachment.

When she began watching the piece she realised it was a video about Nicole Farley, the very same girl she had pulled from the wreckage 25 years before.

Cumley and Farley locked eyes as they met for the first time in 25 years

It showed Nicole snowboarding, fishing, riding a motorbike, going to boot camp, travelling the world, buying two homes, opening her own daycare and recording her own music. It was made to encourage others to overcome adversity they may find in their way.

After seeing her business card, Cumley decided to get in contact with Nicole and emailed her, to which she responded.

In February 2014, the three women who were brought together in such horrendous circumstances, came together again - as Nicole and Roanna surprised Cumley at the home of Nicole's grandparents.

As the pair moved into the room to surprise Cumley, Shelly drops to her knees whilst saying: 'I'm so happy to see you.'

As the trio recounted the events that day and what has happened since, Cumley was obviously moved by Nicole's strength.

'This story could've gone a different way. We could have people who are very bitter and who have not moved on in their life due to this tragic event, but they have persevered.
