Jennifer Cramblett, who ordered sperm from a white man for her and her lesbian partner, did not know that her daughter Payton would be mixed-race until after she became pregnant in April 2012.

According to The Chicago Tribune, the lawsuit states: "On August 21, 2012, Jennifer gave birth to Payton, a beautiful, obviously mixed-race baby girl.

"Jennifer bonded with Payton easily and she and Amanda love her very much. Even so, Jennifer lives each day with fears, anxieties and uncertainty about her future and Payton's future."

The suit continues to explain that raising a mixed-race daughter in an all-white community - which has proven to be racially intolerant - has been stressful for Jennifer and her partner Amanda.

Even things as simple as getting Payton's haircut, apparently, requires Jennifer to travel to a 'black' neighbourhood "where she is obviously different in appearance, and not overtly welcome."

Jennifer and Amanda, who cannot envisage their daughter entering an all-white school, believe they will have to relocate to a more diversified town to prevent Payton from suffering psychological damage.

Despite being refunded for the six vials of sperm used to inseminate her, Jennifer is continuing her case in the hope that it will stop the same thing happening to anyone else.

"I will not let this happen. You can't just do that and say you've got a healthy child, you should be happy.

"I am happy that I have a healthy child. We'd never trade her. But I'm not going let them get away with it.

"If they had some compassion and just said sorry. But they didn't care."

Midwest Sperm Bank has declined to comment on the lawsuit.
