Little Sophia Benner gave the perfect response to a Target cashier who asked her why she wanted a doll with dark skin
As a parent, there are moments where our children show that they are becoming kind, thoughtful, respectful little human beings.
There's nothing that gives us a swell of pride like witnessing those precious moments.
So when a cashier questioned why Brandi Benner's daughter had chosen a doll with dark skin, Brandi Benner couldn't have been prouder of two-year-old Sophia's response.
Brandi had taken Sophia to a local Target shop near their home in South Carolina, US, to pick out a present for finishing her potty training - a momentous occasion, of course!
The little girl knew the magnitude of such a choice, and spent 20 minutes in the toy aisle deciding which doll would be the chosen one.
And when she spotted a girl doll in a doctor's costume - it's Sophia's dream to be a doctor - she was so excited that she didn't let go until they reached the checkout.
Speaking to CNN, Brandi described how the little girl, "Kept going back to the doctor doll, because in her mind, she is already a doctor. She loves giving checkups, and if you come in the house, she'll tell you that's the first thing you need."
She added Sophia was a big fan of the children's Disney TV show Doc McStuffins, and credits the show with teaching Sophia medical terminology like "stethoscope".
It didn't even occur to the toddler that the doctor's skin was a different colour to her.
In an Instagram post, Brandi explained what happened next: "The cashier asked Sophia if she was going to a birthday party. We both gave her a blank stare. She then pointed to the doll and asked Sophia if she picked her out for a friend.
"Sophia continued to stare blankly and I let the cashier know that she was a prize for Sophia being fully potty trained. The woman gave me a puzzled look and turned to Sophia and asked, 'Are you sure this is the doll you want, honey?'
"Sophia finally found her voice and said, 'Yes, please!' The cashier replied, 'But she doesn't look like you. We have lots of other dolls that look more like you.'"
The mum-of-two described her sudden rage at the cashier's attitude - but she needn't have worried: "I immediately became angry, but before I could say anything, Sophia responded with, 'Yes, she does. She's a doctor like I'm a doctor. And I'm a pretty girl and she's a pretty girl. See her pretty hair? And see her stethoscope?'
"Thankfully, the cashier decided to drop the issue and just answer, 'Oh, that's nice.'"
The little girl didn't need her mum to step in and shut down the bigoted cashier - she could handle it all herself.
Brandi added on the post: "This experience just confirmed my belief that we aren't born with the idea that color matters. Skin comes in different colors just like hair and eyes and every shade is beautiful."
