A 22-year-old mountain biker found himself in a spot of bother when he injured himself on the bar of his bike.

Rather than the usual ouch-worthy bruise, the injury resulted in a high flow of blood to his penis, causing an erection which lasted for SEVEN weeks.

The man did not go to hospital for five weeks, presumably due to embarrassment, but, eventually, he presented himself to medics at Tallaght Hospital in Dublin.

Initial treatment failed for the first two weeks before a further inteverntion successfully treated the condition (which is, incidentally, known as priapism).

Dr Ronan Browne, one of the medics who treated the man, explained to the Irish Medical Journal that the treatment "was a great result for [the patient]".

"We were very happy with the outcome."
