Almost any parent or teacher will be aware of the new Loom bands craze that's sweeping the nation.

But, now, as children all across the UK embrace the new craze of making bracelets out of small coloured elastic bands, a doctor from Bristol has a word of warning for parents.

One child came close to losing his fingers as he fell asleep with one of the bands wrapped around his fingers.

Thankfully the parent of the child went in to check on him half an hour after lights out.

The doctor - a mother of three herself - posted a photo and a warning to parents about the elastic bands on a mother's group on Facebook.

She wrote: "Please be careful with looms - zoom in on the fingers - the parent of this child thankfully went in to check on him half an hour after lights out."

Dr Anne-Marie Houlder, a senior GP in Stafford, has also urged parents to be vigilant.

She said: "They could be a choking hazard or cause circulatory problems if children swallow or wrap them round their fingers for any length of time.

"Parents need to be aware of the potential dangers if children are left unattended."

It is not just children who are at risk; in a joint statement issued by the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) and EcoWaste Coalition, people have been warned that the cute but hard to digest rubber bands used to make bracelets can make cats and dogs ill.

“As the rubber band bracelet craze hits the country, we urge fans to remember that these loom bands could spell danger for pets and should be handled with care to prevent pet injuries,” Anna Cabrera, executive director of PAWS, said.

However many parents have lashed out at comments, insisting the hobby is a fun one, with minimal danger. They also added that Loom encourages creativity.
