Police officers were called to a house in Anaheim, California, US, following an anonymous tip given to child protection services.

According to The Sun, the cage – similar to a large dog kennel – was found in the home with a mattress and other bedding inside.

A spokesperson for the police explained: “It appeared that as he grew older his episodes of violence and outbursts were increasing.

“Perhaps the parents utilised the cage as a tool to modify that and to contain him when that was happening.

“Obviously, putting your child in a locked cage, even if you’re desperate for help, is not the best course of action.”

The boy’s parents were arrested on suspicion of felony child endangerment and false imprisonment, although have not yet been formally charged.

Despite the fact their son was being kept in a cage, the child was reportedly well-nourished and appeared healthy.

His two siblings - aged eight and 10 - were also unharmed.
