Air hostess Ashley miraculously calmed down Whitney Poyntz's screaming baby on a packed WestJet flight

It's every parent's worst nightmare.

Preparing to take a baby on an aeroplane is blimmin' hard work as it is, never mind when you actually get onto the plane.

You pray with every fibre of your being that somehow, your baby will make it through the flight without having a meltdown - because it feels in that moment like there's literally nothing worse than the furious, hate-filled stares from the other passengers.

And on the other side of the coin, we've all been those passengers - dog-tired, you just want to get home, you've got the post-holiday blues already and then a baby starts screaming. It's not exactly ideal, is it?

Unfortunately for one mum, her four-month-old daughter became startled on a flight and let rip mid-way through her flight from Palm Springs to Calgary.

Whitney Poyntz, from Calgary in the US, was travelling with her husband Geoff back home from holiday. The couple tried everything to get her little one to calm down, but she wasn't having any of it.

Cue Ashley the heroine air hostess!

Writing a heartfelt post of gratitude on WestJet's Facebook page, Whitney wrote: "My husband, four-month-old daughter and I were travelling home from our holiday. Our daughter was asleep when we boarded so we figured it would be an easy peasy flight, man were we wrong..."

Whitney explained that it may have been the captain talking over the intercom that had startled their little girl: "Once the captain came on the intercom it woke her up, which is obviously no-one's fault. After being nursed back to sleep, the headphones went in and we turned on our movies.

"About 30 mins later, all hell broke loose. Not sure if it was gas or maybe pressure, but we did not have a happy baby! Unfortunately those seats aren't made for rocking or trying to put a baby back to sleep."

All parents will be able to relate to Whitney's words: "Eyes glaring, sweat dripping down our foreheads trying to get her back to sleep, in comes the hero of the day... A flight attendant named Ashley. Ashley came up to us and asked if she could take her and walk up and down the aisle."

Whitney and Geoff were initially confused by Ashley's kind offer: "First thought in my head was, 'Umm, a stranger wants to walk my screaming child up and down the aisle?!'

"But she did and got her calmed down. Now, it may not seem like a lot, but the experience was amazing. Never would I ever think someone would do that - volunteer to take your screaming child, but she did.

"Westjet (Ashley), I would like to thank you for the over and above customer service (baby-whispering) that you gave, truly the greatest airline."

The post has now been shared over 8,500 times with 103,000 likes. Many commenters were quick to praise the airline, with one saying: "We love WestJet!", and another saying "WestJet is the only airline we fly with."

Well, if that doesn't restore your faith in humanity, we don't know what will!
