Little Marwan was found by UN workers near the border of Jordan and Syria, after being separated from his family while fleeing war-torn Syria.
The 4-year-old, who was carrying a plastic bag filled with his possessions, was photographed by Andrew Harper, Jordan’s representative to the UN’s High Commissioner for Refugees.
And the heartbreaking images seem to have struck a chord with the world.
There are no words to describe the sight of a tiny boy wandering in a vast desert, are there?
Thankfully little Marwan was reunited with his mother shortly after being carried across the Jordan border:
A reporter tweeted on Monday evening that a UNHCR official said Marwan was only 20 steps behind his family after he became lost during the confusion of the crossing.

Despite this, the picture of a little boy wandering through the desert has served as a brutal reminder of the many young children who have lost or become separated from their families due to the conflict in Syria.
More than 130,000 people have been killed since the conflict began and 2.5 million people, including an estimated one million children, have been forced to flee the country. The UN Refugee Agency are busy trying to help victims and refugees - and are working tirelessly to ensure the safety of as many as possible.
