Woman tragically learns her husband has died via Twitter: “No, don’t tell me that”

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone accidentally told a woman that her husband had died when he posted his condolences on Twitter

The wife of a sports journalist who died in a car crash while covering the World Cup in Brazil only learned of her loss when a football boss sent her his condolences on Twitter.

After hearing of the death of Jorge 'El Topo' Lopez, Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone tweeted that he was 'not only a great journalist' but 'also a friend'.

Simeone included Lopez's wife, Veronica Brunati, in the tweet.

Distressingly, she had not yet heard of the tragedy, quickly replying: 'No. Diego, don't tell me that.

'Please, someone call me.'

The 38-year-old was killed on Wednesday after the taxi he was travelling in was hit by a stolen car fleeing police in Guarulhos, near Sao Paolo.

The journalist died at the scene.

Speaking after messages of support came flooding in, Ms Brunati said: "Thank you to all for the support for me and my children. The man of my life was the love of my life - I have no comfort.

"He gave everything for journalism. It was his passion; his profession; His true love. I just wanted to make him happy."

Lopez is the second journalist from Argentina to die in a road collision within a week, following the death of Maria Fernandez.
