When firefighter Charlie Heflin answered an emergency call out reporting an baby that had been left under a tree, he did as he always does and answered to his call of duty.

He arrived at the address- a cemetery in Illinois, USA- and searched high and low to no avail.

As his colleagues started to pack up and head home, Charlie decided to take a chance and look in a different cemetery.

It was there he found Skyler. She was newly born with her umbilical cord still attached. Naked, freezing and barely alive, Charlie found her covered in blood and leaves.

Charlie said: ‘I heard a little whimper when I got close to the tree. I dug down inside this real huge pine tree and found her… I handed her off to the paramedics and I didn’t see her since.’

Five days later, Skylar was adopted by Bonnie and Greg James.

Eighteen years later, after learning about her amazing story of survival, Skylar decided to find the man who saved her life.

She found out his name through some old newspapers, and called the fire station where she believed he still worked.

She eventually got through to the man who saved her life, and the two reconnected during an emotional telephone call.

Amazingly, Charlie and Skylar were reunited when he surprised her at her high school gradation party.

Skylar told a local radio station: ‘I was talking to someone at my party and my parents came up and said, ‘We need you for a second.’ They took me over to Charlie and he introduced himself to me and told me the whole story again. I was totally shocked. It’s something that I’ve dreamed of since I was a little kid, and it’s amazing.’
