The young girl is being treated in hospital after allegedly being shot in the head by her father, who then turned his weapon on himself.
The man, who has not yet been identified, fatally shot himself after taking aim at his eight-year-old daughter.
The incident occurred earlier today in Spring Hill in Northiam, East Sussex.
Sussex police revealed that the extent of the young girl’s injuries are not yet known, but that 'there is no evidence that the public is at risk’.
A villager named Anthony Burr told the Mail Online that he believed that father had returned to his former partner’s home where he shot his daughter.
He explained: “At round 4pm, I came back and heard what I thought was a firearm about 200 yards from our house.”
“Then my neighbour, who my kids were playing with, said there were reports that a father had shot his daughter and was still at large.”
“Then I started to get reports that he had shot himself. What appears to have transpired is that a father has gone to his ex's house where his daughter lives and has shot her.”
He added: “This has all come from neighbours and eyewitnesses.”
“Armed officers are at the scene ensuring the area is safe. There is no evidence that the public are at risk.
“Spring Hill has been sealed off while officers investigate the incident and is likely to be closed for the next few hours.”
Sussex police have since confirmed: “The body of a man has been found at the scene in Northiam. His death is not being treated as suspicious.”
