Alarmingly, according to a Bayer Healthcare survey of 1,500 British women aged 25-34, nearly a quarter of those questioned had heard of people using DIY 'alternatives' to condoms as contraception, with unreliable methods including latex gloves, cling film and sandwich bags.

Worryingly, one in 10 said they believed it was impossible to get pregnant during their period, and 17 per cent said they'd relied on the 'withdrawal' method in the past.

The pill proved most popular, with 48 per cent saying it was their most regular form of contraception. However, almost a third had never heard of the hormonal implant, while 27 per cent did not know about the contraceptive injection.
