'My Parents Open Carry' is the story of 13-year-old Brenna Strong and her family.

But, unlike most families, Brenna's parents Bea and Richard Strong both carry handguns for self defence.

The book's synopsis reads: "The Strongs join a growing number of families that are standing up for their 2nd Amendment rights by open carrying and bringing gun ownership out of the closet and into the mainstream.

"If you open carry and have a difficult time explaining why to your family and friends, or if you want to learn about the open carry of a handgun, or if you've wondered if open carry is right for you, then this book is what you need."

The book, written by geologist Brian G Jeffs, was published back in 2011, but drew new attention this month after it was lampooned on US comedy show The Colbert Report.

Unsurprisingly, many have taken to Amazon in outrage, slamming the site for allowing such a book to be sold.

One wrote: "Obscene. Wish there was a minus-star scale… thoroughly disappointed that you're trafficking such products."

Another added: "The only good news is that most of their target audience can't read."

However plenty of Amazon customers have opted to post a more comical, sarcastic response.

One has written: "I had trouble explaining to my children that in America, the world's greatest, most civilised and advanced country, everyone needs to carry guns around because otherwise bad people will riddle them with bullets every time they shop at K-Mart.

"Thanks to this heartwarming book, my children know that the sensible way to resolve life's little misunderstandings is to ensure everyone else knows that you'll shoot them in the face if they look at you sideways!"

He added: "They think it's real fun to live in a climate of constant fear and paranoia, exactly as the founding fathers intended."
