When a mother-of-six battling cancer made an online plea for help covering her medical expenses, she did not expect this hugely generous outcome.
Kayla Gaytan was overwhelmed when strangers came together to raise over $1,000,000 (£800,000) for her and her family.
The 29-year-old from the US already had two children when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and underwent five months of chemotherapy.
Despite doctors telling her that she would never be able to have more children, she found out that she was pregnant just one month after celebrating the news that her cancer had gone into remission.
And she wasn’t to expect just one bundle of joy – she was pregnant with quadruplets!
She told People: “I called my husband to hell him and he couldn’t believe it … He thought he had misheard me!”
However, at seven months pregnant Kayla and her husband received the heart breaking news that the cancer had returned.
The four babies were delivered ten weeks early in order for Kayla to start the cancer treatments as soon as possible.
She was told she had a 50% chance of surviving the illness within the next five years, and the family set up a GoFundMe page in order to help them cover their medical bills.
Their goal was $5,000 – but to their surprise strangers have collectively raised over a million dollars for Kayla and her family.
“We’re just in shock because we never expected this,” she says.
“It renews my faith in humanity. To know that people that don’t even know us just wanted to help our family is amazing.”
The family’s strength is so inspiring and we wish them all the best for the future.
