Elita Amantova, who was sleeping rough in London when she gave birth, was sentenced to hospital order at the Old Bailey after she was found to be suffering from mental illness.
The 39-year-old denied murdering her baby but admitted to infanticide.
The gruesome discovery of her baby’s body was made after body parts were found on Tooting Common. The body of the newborn was uncovered by a fox after Ms Amantova had buried he or she alive.
The crime was committed in September 2012, and the mother was sleeping rough in a graveyard, living off of berries and bread left out for birds.
Ms Amantova has been diagnosed with a ‘schizophrenia-type’ mental condition whilst living in her native Latvia, but was not being treated when she moved to the UK.
The mother’s condition reportedly worsened when she gave birth.
A lawyer for the prosecution told the court at the Old Bailey that Ms Amantova had an ‘appalling experience’ upon arriving in England.
After struggling to find work, she was allegedly forced into prostitution by a gang in Norfolk before escaping and fleeing to London.
Ms Amantova’s trial and sentencing took a substantial amount of time due to her mental disorder.
