Giving birth is often seen as a painful and gruelling experience, but a quarter of mums say they ‘love’ being in labour and giving birth a study shows.
Channel Mum – the UK’s first YouTube community for mums – teamed up with The Positive Birth Movement to create a video revealing more than two thirds of mothers described giving birth as a positive experience.
Their research showed that 24% of mums said giving birth was much easier than expected and 41% of women said their favourite part of the process was just as the baby is being born.
Modern mums now share their birth stories, with almost a quarter posting to social media – like blogger Nadia Bartel who admitted to shaving and fake-tanning her legs whilst in labour!
Channel Mum founder Siobhan Freegard commented on the findings, saying: “No other life changing experience has such a bad reputation as giving birth. Yes, it can be gruelling and it can go wrong, but it can also be amazing, empowering and even pleasurable, with a surprising number of mums saying they enjoyed an orgasmic birth.”
And one mother who found her experience ‘orgasmic’ was Sangeeta Freeman, who appeared on This Morning to share with presenters Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby her story.
The 42-year-old revealed: “I had a very positive prenatal experience. I immersed myself in positive experiences. I was excited to give birth.
“When nature is allowed to do its thing, exquisite things can happen.”
On the show, it was revealed that 6% of women experience orgasmic births, which Sangeeta said is down to relaxation.
Sangeeta also revealed that during her 27 hour labour, she had sex with her partner. And throughout her contractions she enjoyed a very pleasurable experience:
“During my contractions, I was thinking ‘I want more of this’ and it would be wonderful for it to go on as long as possible.
“I didn't want one of these quick labours. I wanted one I would remember. And it was definitely that.
“It was like I was on a high, but so much better than any orgasm I had ever had,” she revealed.
But Twitter had mixed feelings about Sangeeta's experience...
What did you think of Sangeeta's experience? Have you ever had an orgasm whilst in childbirth?
