British police have been scouring several large areas of land, including drainage pipes and abandoned buildings, in Praia De Luz, Portugal, since last week.
But today the search has been abandoned after officials confirmed 'no evidence relating to Madeleine McCann has been identified.'
However the inquiry will now move onto a 'new phase' according to police, who are working in conjunction with the Portuguese authorities.
Hopes were raised that the whereabouts of Maddie might finally be found when detectives were seen taking bags of evidence away from a site last week, but it was later confirmed to be nothing of interest to the case.
Yesterday orange graffiti was found near one of the search sites that read (in Portuguese) 'Maddie's parents killed her. English police are stupid!'
The sentiment is one shared with many of the locals, who resent the search taking place as the tourist season kicks off in the area.
Madeleine disappeared in May 2007 from her holiday apartment. Since then, her parents have campaigned tirelessly to find the truth of what happened to her. Sadly today if seems we are no closer to finding that truth.
