In the wake of the recent scandal surrounding the quality of care given to elderly patients in care homes, Katie Hopkins, 39, has said that relatives need to start looking after their loved ones themselves.

Writing on Twitter, she said: "Families quick to complain of treatment of the old in hospitals. Not so quick to visit & care themselves? Mine go in - I'm in. No messing.
"Strikes me families are fast to chase compensation, & slow to get their arses on a ward at visiting time. Give them water & food yourselves."
Katie then singled out Jeremy Bowen, the veteran BBC journalist who revealed his father, 84, was being left without food and water in hospital.

He revealed: "I don’t know the full facts except it seems pretty clear he didn’t have food or drink as far as we know.
"They discovered all this on Saturday and he was admitted Thursday-Friday overnight, so by then it would have been 24 hours or so.
“Apparently he was wearing the same clothes he had been wearing when he was admitted. There’s some big question marks about his care there,” he said.
Kati, writing in response to these shocking revelations, said: "Let me get this straight Jeremy Bowen, you had time to tweet about the terrible care of your dad - but not to visit?"**

Unsurprisingly, Katie came under fire for her comments on Twitter.

One person angrily wrote: "I think the very least a patient would expect is food and water it's not prison FFS!! [sic]"
Another added: "They may be at work katie !!! Thought visiting times were AFTER meal times ? You will be expecting rels to administer drugs next [sic]"
However some supported Katie's views, with one user writing: "They need to focus… more on being there for them when it matters. Long stays in hospital are so isolating. [sic]"
Another added: "You work around it. I did."
