The singer was jailed for 29 years for committing a string of horrific sex offences, including attempting to rape a baby.
His two accomplices, known only as Woman A and Woman B, were also jailed for 14 years.
Following his sentencing, the judge describe Watkins as a ‘committed and determined paedophile who had plumbed new depths of depravity.’
An inquiry has now been opened to find out if Watkins’ celebrity status affected the trial and the gathering of evidence.
The onquiry will also investigate how the police handled a complaint from a member of public who reported Watkins in October 2012.
Independent Police Complaints Commissioner Jan Williams said: ‘We are continuing to gather and analyse information in all three investigations in order to establish what steps were taken by police in response to the allegations made against Ian Watkins, whether he could have been brought to justice sooner and whether his celebrity status had any impact on those investigations.’
According to reports, Watkins spoke to a female friend following his first appearance in court, telling her his two accounts of attempted rape on a baby were ’mega lolz.’
