Yes, you read that right; a woman has done the (almost) unthinkable, and helped to deliver her own baby... by c-section.

Sarah Toyer, from Queensland, Australia, has described how literally she helped to bring her fourth child into the world.

Writing on the Facebook group Birth Without Fear, the mother-of-four shared her incredible birthing story with the world.

Sarah opens the post - which is accompanied by pictures of the actual moment - by saying: "This was the moment I welcomed our fourth baby into the world. Yes I delivered my son during my fourth cesarean."

She then goes on to explain: "When I discovered I was pregnant I was determined to have a maternal assisted c-section!"

Talking about the moment she pulled her son out of her womb, Sarah wrote: "I was lying on the operating table watching my son's head being pulled from my womb. I reached down and put my hands under his arms and lifted the rest of him out of my own body."

Before adding: "It was the most incredible thing I have ever done."

Maternal assisted c-sections - where the mother helps to pull the baby from the womb - are still pretty rare, but it's a birthing trend which seems to be gatherine pace.

Another woman who had one - who goes by the name 'Mumma of seven' - even posted a video or her maternal assisted cesarean on Youtube.

Despite clearly loving the experience, Sarah - who has three other children, all of whom were born by cesarean - admitted that it nearly didn't happen, saying: "I talked to every midwife, doctor, and surgeon about what I wanted to do, but they all said it would depend on the surgeon on call that day."

On this note, she ended her post by urging other mothers to fight for the birth they want, saying: "I highly recommend you stick to your guns about what birth you want!"
