The patient, who had travelled from Sierra Leone before reporting symptoms, was not transferred to the isolation unit in the Royal Free Hospital- the only UK hospital equipped to deal with an Ebola outbreak.

Instead, he was kept in the Lewisham hospital, and treated by doctors and nurses wearing just gloves and masks.

The insider at Lewisham hospital said: ‘The hospital is unprepared. Staff were panicking and scared for their safety.’

The man was later found not to have the deadly virus.

The outbreak has killed 3,000 people in west Africa, with an American nurse the first US citizen to be infected on the weekend.
