Saad al-Hilli 50, his wife, Ikbal, 47, and her mother were shot alongside a cyclist while driving on a forest road in France two years ago.

The couple’s two daughters survived the attack.

Although detectives have yet to find a culprit – who they claim would have been a ‘trained marksman’ – in a bizarre twist earlier today it was revealed that Ikbal had a secret ex husband, who died in America on the same day of their murder.

Ikbal was briefly married to the American dentist, in 1999 – a fact that was reportedly unknown to their family – who suffered a heart attack.

However, police investigating the murders have now ruled out a link between the two.

Following the shooting, officers arrested Saad’s brother and a 48-year-old man but both were later released without charge.
