A spate of horror crashes have made headlines in recent months, highlighting the need for tougher action against killer drivers.

Last week it was revealed child actor Makayah McDermottt, 10, was killed alongside his aunt Rozanne Cooper, 34, when a stolen car ploughed into them in South London.

Days later, mum Hoden Aden, 44, escaped jail after fatally injuring a two-year-old Fahima Hassan in an Asda car park, while talking on her hands-free mobile phone behind the wheel.

Shockingly, despite the rising number of deaths and serious injuries caused by road accidents every year, death by dangerous driving still only carries a minimum sentence of one year in prison.

Earlier this month Prime Minister Theresa May announced she is considering a major overhaul of dangerous driving laws after “widespread concern” over soft sentences.

And the government have now clamped down on drivers using their mobile phones whilst driving - which has caused 200 deaths in the past ten years - by introducing a six points penalty and £200 fine.

Claire Foster, 45, will live forever with the devastation wrecked by a dangerous driving incident.

Her daughter Bethany was just 18 when she was paralysed in a crash caused by her friend Brian Taylor, who was speeding and lost control of his Renault Clio.

Bethany, now 20, suffered severe brain damage and is unable to walk or talk and is fed through a tube.

Shockingly, Taylor, 23, was given just a 32-month sentence and banned from driving for five years.

Claire – who has four sons and lives in Gateshead – wants to see tougher sentencing for dangerous drivers to stop other families suffering the same pain.

She explains: “Seeing my daughter unable to feed, wash herself or talk at 20 is unbearable and something no mother should have to go through. Bethany was so fun-loving and popular, now her future has been stolen.

“I’m disgusted Taylor has been given such a short sentence. He walked away without a scratch on him and he’ll be out of prison in a few years. What kind of deterrent is that? I also think he should’ve been banned for life.”
