Mark Sandland, 28, is said to have experienced a sudden loss of temper, before picking up five-week-old Aimee-Rose and shaking her.

Despite claiming that he’d had an epileptic fit and came round to find Aimee-Rose underneath him, police investigating at the scene found a PlayStation controller on the sofa.

He was initially charged with murder, but leaded guilty to manslaughter.

The prosecution said: “It’s the Crown’s case that, frustrated by the distraction of Aimee-Rose screaming, the defendant picked her up and gripped her around her torso and shook her in a sudden loss of temper and loss of control.

“Despite his admission that the television was on that morning, by the time the ambulance crew arrived it had been switched off, this covering up the fact he had been playing on his PlayStation.”

Aimee’s mother was at university when the incident occurred. At lunch-time that day she sent a text to Mark to ask how their daughter was, he replied: “She hasn’t shut up since about half an hour after you left.”

Following the tragic events of the afternoon, Mark told ambulance staff: “I’m epileptic. I had a fit and woke up and that baby was underneath me.”

The defendant added: “She was unconscious, unresponsive and, although emergency procedures carried out by the ambulance crew re-established a heart-beat, she was unable to maintain any respiratory effort without life support.
