Cheeky, a Shih-tzu poodle cross from Brighton, had to have her front paws amputated after they became “detached” with RSPCA officials citing “long term neglect”.

Her owner, 64, is facing sentencing next month after neighbours called the animal charity over worries about the animal.

During the court case prosecutor David Buck described Cheeky’s owners worries about taking his to the vet, fearing the animal might be taken away from him.

He tried to resolve the problem himself after noticing her fur matting.

“He was scared because he thought they would take her away. He tried to cut Cheeky’s hair himself but she would not let him near her” Buck continued.

The prosecutor further described the condition of the animal saying “She could not be taken out as she could not walk – he would play with her in the flat”.

Cheeky was promptly removed from Derek’s care once the RSPCA were involved and now has a happy new home and a new name (pictured now, top).

The RSPCA have said the treatment for the animal, which included teeth removal, had been expensive “Cheeky was in hospital for months and cost the RSPCA thousands. She was in a lot of pain.”

During the operation, vets were forced to remove her paws

Florence, as she’s now known, is being looked after by Karen Branagh - a member of staff at RSPCA - who has described her new pet as adorable. “Florence is a little darling. She is doing very well”.

She is thriving in her new environment with Karen adding “She can now walk on carpet and soft grass.”

Derek has admitted animal cruelty and has been warned that he could face jail.

The case has been adjourned until December.
