A survivor of the Boston Marathon bombings that took place in 2013 is now planning to marry the firefighter who saved her life.

Roseann Sdoia, 48, lost her leg in the bombings. She had an prosthetic leg fitted, and stayed in the Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital learning how to walk again.

It was during that time that she got to know Mike Materia properly, the firefighter who had saved her life.

Now, nearly four years after that horrendous experience, the two are engaged and planning to marry at the end of the year.

And, apparently, it's all down to her mum!

Speaking to The New York Post, Roseann said of her mum: "She was like, 'Oh, did you see that firefighter? He's so cute'. I was like, 'Mom, I just got blown up'."

After the blast, firefighter Mike used a belt as a make-shift tourniquet as her leg was bleeding severely and held her hand on the the way to hospital.

She said: "I asked him if I was going to die. And he told me that I was going to be OK, that I only had a flesh wound."

Mike, who Roseann describes as her "guardian angel", helped her through her recovery, visiting regularly.

"I knew I was starting to have feelings for him because he was so kind and caring - and he has an unbelievable smile," she said.

She went on: "He's seen me on my worst day.

"I was probably not the nicest to him from the get-go. I was in pain. But now we laugh and blame it on the morphine."

Roseann and Mike went on their first date two months after the attack in June 2013. They are now planning to marry in October or November after Mike proposed at the Nantucket Historical Association - but it turns out he had some help...

The couple took their dog, Sal, on holiday with them to Nantucket. Mike had a specially engraved dog tag made that read: "Mike wants to know... If you'll marry him."

Roseann said: "Sal means so much to both of us. It couldn't have been more romantic."

She added: "I do feel that, in a sense, some things happen for a reason."

Congratulations to the couple!
