When it comes to sex, a lot of us have a LOT of opinions about what makes it good - or bad.

Some people prefer it with candles and silk sheets, others prefer things a little more… hmm, let’s say ‘spontaneous’.

But, on the whole, it’s generally agreed that a steamy lovemaking session that feels like it’s lasted f-o-r-e-v-e-r is more satisfying than a quick two minute fumble between the sheets.

So how long does sex normally last?

Well, Dr Brendan Zietsch, a psychologist from the University of Queensland, has examined decided to find an answer to this pressing question.

He gave a stopwatch to 500 couples, asked them to press start as they got down ’n’ dirty, and tap stop when the man reached his big conclusion.

Romantic, eh?

They discovered that sex can last from 33 seconds to 44 minutes - but there IS an average duration for lovemaking.

And the answer is…

Well, the answer is 5.4 minutes.

Writing for The Conversation, Dr Zietsch said: “You may note this could affect the mood somewhat, and might perhaps not exactly reflect the natural flow of things.

“But science is rarely perfect, and this is the best we've got.”

Hey, at least it gives us all something to work towards, doesn’t it?

Are you surprised that sex, on average, lasts for 5.4 minutes?
