Closer’s dating expert, Rebecca Twomey – who met Michael Griffiths before he entered the villa – shares why he went about everything in the wrong way
There’s never a nice way to reject someone but wow, didn’t Love Island’s Michael Griffiths show there’s certainly a wrong way to do it?
In last night’s explosive episode (watched by a staggering 4.3million people) Michael, 28, became public enemy no.1 as he entered into a vicious spat with ex Amber Rose Gill after he recoupled with newbie Joanna Chimonides.
Ahead of the new girls’ arrival into the now infamous villa, Michael appeared smitten with Amber, 21, insisting she was the woman for him. But while the firefighter managed to thaw her icy demeanor over four weeks, it took him less than four days to move on.
As avid fans know, the path of Love (Island) doesn’t run smooth, and who are we to judge Michael for falling for someone else? But he justified his decision by turning on Amber, blaming her for the issues in their ill-fated romance saying, “You made me look like a d***head” adding how he’d “bitten my tongue when I wouldn't usually.”

And as Montana prepares to become clothing brand Pretty Little Things' brand new ambassador, Alex has signed a modelling deal with Boohoo Men, leaving the pair with very little time on their hands for a romance.Montana has now confirmed her split with Alex after admitting it has been 'hard' on the outside world. Despite the split, the pair have remained friends.
He was accused of ‘gas lighting’ which seems pretty extreme. First we hated on Joe Garratt, then Danny Williams, now it’s Michael and by the time I’ve finished writing this, I imagine it’ll be Curtis Pritchard.
We can’t hate Michael for following his feelings or wanting to be with someone else, but what is unforgivable is hurting someone who is already heartbroken because of your actions. This breaks every rule of a break up.
From my experience, when someone doesn’t like the repercussions of their decisions and actions they’d prefer to blame you for how you're feeling than to admit their guilt of being the perpetrator of your pain.

It’s the boyfriend who you discovered was cheating but accuses you of snooping through his messages. Or the guy who stood you up and calls you psycho when you express your anger at him.
Rejection stings, and as Closer’s dating columnist I am sadly well versed in the experience. When you’re dating today the next hot new single is just a swipe away, or in the case of Love Island, a bombshell away.
But no matter how many times you’ve been dumped or worse, ghosted, it still doesn’t get any easier to deal with.
Ending a relationship, calling time on a fling or letting someone know you don’t want a second date with them is really simple, you say, “Was lovely to have met you, you’re a great person but I’m afraid this isn’t the right thing for me. I wish you lots of happiness.” End of.
You don’t need to invest any strong emotions – be it anger or frustration, into the breakup chat because you no longer feel anything for that person. Or do you, Michael?
