Mark, who previously appeared in Heartbeat as PC Phil Bellamy, shares 21-year-old Joseph and 17-year-old Poppy with his ex-wife, Downton Abbey's Siobhan Finneran, who he divorced five years ago.

He is due to appear in court in July this year after being charged with grievous bodily harm against 68-year-old Andrew Potts and assault by beating Rosalind O'Neill - charges he denied.

Mark and Laura aren't the only Emmerdale couple to become engaged this New Year, as their co-star Fiona Wade AKA Priya Sharma also announced her engagement to former Emmerdale actor Simon Cotton.

Taking to Instagram, Fiona shared a loved-up snap of herself and Simon with the caption, 'Two days ago this beautiful man asked me to be his wife. There has never been an easier answer to a question.... Yes! 💍❤️. Feel so incredibly blessed 💛 Wishing you all a wonderful 2019 & so much love for the year ahead ❤️🎉😘.' [sic]
