Winner: Mercedes-Benz V-Class

In the Parkers Car of the Year Awards, the seven-seater category is one of the most complex; many cars safely offer space for a driver and six extras, but inevitably the ones in the rear feel more like bit parts than star guests. As crossovers and SUVs have taken over the market for MPVs, there’s the added inelegance of climbing up and over middle-row seats to get access those right at the back.

Ensuring there’s comfortable space for seven adults, there’s one vehicle that deserves recognition – and it’s as at home dropping kids off at the school gates or the red carpet, without sacrificing day-to-day practicality or incurring scandalous running costs. Mercedes is no Apprentice when it comes to making limousines for VIPs; the Mercedes-Benz V-Class is the ultimate seven- (or eight-) seater for families that don’t want to compromise, as well as professional drivers that need to make a good impression.

“If you need to transport up to six of your VIPs in safe, plush surroundings, without leaving any of life’s necessities at home, nothing comes close to a V-Class” Keith WR Jones, Parkers Deputy Editor

That uncompromising nature does mean the exterior reflects the van-like space inside – it is, after all, based on a popular Mercedes van. Unlike other van conversions, that feel more like a minibus than an executive jet, the V-Class is trimmed with elements of S-Class luxury, top-flight infotainment, and impressive refinement from the 2.0-litre diesel engine and nine-speed transmission. Power’s also on offer with the V 300 d, producing 236hp and 500Nm for effortless long-distance cruising even with a full load of passengers and paraphernalia.

Trimming the V-Class to feel like a superstar isn’t difficult, another aspect that puts it ahead of big 4x4s with spare seats in the boot. Reclining centre row seats, panoramic glass roof and surround-sound audio are all on the menu, alongside lavish two-tone interior trim and driver assistance features so the person behind the wheel can relax almost as much as the passengers.

You can compromise, but if you want the best, though, there’s no doubt. Parkers, with Closer, have awarded the V-Class Best Seven Seater 2020.
