Review: The Ickworth – a countryside hotel that welcomes families

Ickworth hotel

The Ickworth is a hotel within easy reach of London that welcomes families including babies and toddlers and provides free childcare

What's the biggest thing you miss when you become a parent? OK, other than sleep. And going on nights out. That's right - it's lovely weekends away.

Sure, you can still go to a hotel - but what are you meant to do when your child goes to bed after In the Night Garden? Go to bed too? Igglepiggle et al are soporific but sometimes momma wants a Martini.

Fortunately, The Ickworth has you covered. It's part of the Luxury Family Hotel group, that also includes the New Park Manor Hotel. And while it's not as fancy, or as expensive, as New Park Manor, what it lacks in sophistication it more than makes up for in charm and a jaw-dropping setting.

Location of The Ickworth

The hotel is located in a 19th century manor house, formerly home of the Hervey family. It's now half hotel, half National Trust property, and set in 1800 acres of stunning parkland.

Rooms at The Ickworth

We stayed in a large double that had plenty of room for a toddler to run around, plus stunning views over the Ickworth estate. A cot with blanket and a mini fridge were provided free of charge.

Food at The Ickworth

Breakfast is served in the conservatory, hands-down probably the prettiest place we've ever downed a petit croissant. High tea is served for children between 5 and 6pm, and adults can dine in the hotel's fancy Frederick's restaurant while reception staff keep an ear on the kids via a listening service. Bliss.

Childcare at The Ickworth

As well as a listening service, guests can take advantage of two hours free childcare a day in the hotel's creche. This includes a Sunday morning breakfast club when staff will collect your little one from your room at 8am and keep them entertained for 90minutes.

Facilities at The Ickworth

There's a gorgeous indoor swimming pool with toys and armbands provided. But what really sets the Ickworth apart is the incredible grounds that you can explore. Bikes and scooters of all sizes are provided free of charge. There's also giant chess in the gardens, plus trampolines and two playgrounds.
