Foods to AVOID if you want to get pregnant

A diet of pizzas, fried chicken and burgers and chips with little or no fruit makes it harder for women to become pregnant, a new study found

Those who eat little or no fruit and more "junk" fast food take longer to get pregnant and are less likely to conceive within a year.

Compared to women who ate fruit three or more times a day in the month before conception, women who ate fruit less than one to three times a month took half a month longer to become pregnant.

Similarly, compared to women who never or rarely ate fast food, women who consumed fast food four or more times a week took nearly a month longer to become pregnant.

The study suggested a junk food diet made it harder to conceive and increased the risk of infertility.

Past studies found smoking, drinking, drugs and obesity of both the men and women affected fertility but the role of preconception diet in women remains poorly studied.

The new findings stresses the importance of a healthy diet in women who do not have fertility problems in trying to have a baby.

Lead author Professor Claire Roberts, Lloyd Cox Professorial Research Fellow from the University of Adelaide's Robinson Research Institute said: "The findings show that eating a good quality diet that includes fruit and minimising fast food consumption improves fertility and reduces the time it takes to get pregnant."

First author post-doctoral research fellow Dr Jessica Grieger said: "We recommend that women who want to become pregnant should align their dietary intakes towards national dietary recommendations for pregnancy.

"Our data shows that frequent consumption of fast foods delays time to pregnancy."
